- UC DAVIS BOOK OF HORSES
by the Faculty and Staff at University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
This is an easy-to-understand, authoritative, yet not oversimplified reference to horse behavior, health, care, nutrition, breeding, anatomy and more. Contains very thorough information on caring for sick or injured horses. Also includes a detailed equine medical glossary. This is a standard reference all equine rescues should have... unless they are able to afford the Merck Veterinary Manual, sold only by Merck and quite pricey, but definitive... not as easy to understand as the Davis book. You can get information on how to order the Merck Manual here.

- Horse Owners Guide to Natural Hoof Care
by Jaime Jackson
Paperback, 192 pages, Star Ridge Publishing
Recommended for its basis on the natural hoof as studied in wild horses. Jackson is a long time farrier who after 20 some years of traditional practice, took the time to study the hooves of hundreds of mustangs while the BLM had them on a surgical-type table for hoof trimming and castration before being put up for adoption. His observations turned many of his opinions around. This book is slanted toward keeping horses barefoot, with the use of horse boots if needed instead of shoes.
- Founder, Prevention and Cure - The Natural Way
Jaime Jackson
Jackson's approach to using a the horse's natural life style to prevent founder, and how to handle a case should one occur. If you deal with a lot of founder cases, this book is definitely worth a look.

- True Unity, Willing Communication Between Horse and Human
by Tom Dorrance, Milly Hunt Porter
Short and sweet, this is a treatise on learning how to achieve cooperation from a horse in a humane manner.
List: $13.27
- True Horsemanship Through Feel
by Bill Dorrance, Leslie Desmond
It is difficult to describe this book, as it is not your ordinary training manual. It is more an operating manual for the horse owner. 93 year old Dorrance talks with Desmond in great detail about how a horse thinks and how we need to communicate with him. He is right on the button with any kind of problem or training situation. I think this book would be a great asset to equine rescues, as so often they have to deal with abused and mishandled horses that have learned not to trust humans. This humane approach will help you cross that barrier and regain the animal's trust. Illustrated with a number of photographs that help explain humane techniques, this is a highly useful and beautifully written and produced book.

Donkeys and Mules
- The Professional Handbook of the Donkey
by Dr. Elisabeth D. Svendsen M.B.E.
This book, published in England, is probably the most comprehensive book in the world on the care of donkeys. Much of the knowledge comes from the meticulous records kept of every donkey at the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon England. The skill of the Sanctuary's veterinary surgeons, non-intrusive research and observations by staff who care daily for their charges have contributed greatly. If you only get one book on donkeys, this is the one.
